According to The Tico Times, a Costa Rican newpaper, the country will comply with an international court order to reinstate women’s rights to IVF.
This comes on the heels of President Luis Guillermo Solís’ meeting with 27 couples who filed an initial complaint before the international court. The court was based out of San Jose, and it’s not the first time this issue had been raised.
Marcela Leandro, one of the representatives of the 27 couples, said the President was affirmative regarding the petition. Despite the country’s ban on IVF, which was imposed by Costa Rica’s Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court in 2000, he stated he “was open” to evaluating the proposal.
This is a major inroad for IVF as Costa Rica is the only country in the Western Hemisphere with a complete ban on in vitro fertilization.
Under the regulation proposed, IVF would be available to couples who are able to provide their own gametes, couples with a gamete donor, and single women.
All would have to provide evidence of a physical condition preventing natural procreation.
While the proposal states that changes should be made in six months, many supporters feel it will happen more quickly. Stay tuned as GlobalIVF follows this story, as well as other breaking stories throughout the world.
