IVF Personal Stories: Arrival in the Czech Republic!

After three flights and many many hours, we finally arrived in the Czech Republic. All airports, except Canada,  were easy to get around (Canada’s immigration dept was so mean to us because of a prior conflict my husband had when he was in college visiting there.  They almost didn’t let us through to our flight.) There was a lot of walking in Frankfurt but the signs were pretty easy to follow. One funny incidence was a customs line where some people were having their bags checked and others were just walking through. We asked the guy, “Do we wait in line here or go through?” He replied, “Whatever you want.”  One guy was having the entire contents of his carry-on dumped out on the table and we took one look at that and walk right through. Why would we WANT to have a check?  Also interesting was their security did not require us to take off our shoes. Nice!  And the Czech Republic didn’t even check our passports so my only stamp is from Frankfort.

We hired a driver for $75 USD and he took us from the airport to our 1st appointment for my ultrasound.  My lining was 9.7 mm which they said was excellent and they told me that my donor had 10 follicles (potential eggs). Let’s hope they all mature and make it.  Now the stressful part of whether the eggs will fertilize when the time comes. We’ve never done IVF so this is unknown to us.

Then the driver, who waited for us outside, took us to our Prague hotel so we could drop off our main luggage and then drove us to the train with our carry-on to head to Cesky Krumlov for a weekend getaway.  The train station was incredibly difficult to figure out. Once we learned that platforms (where the trains took off) were NOT announced until 15 minutes before departure, we got it.  But there aren’t a lot of English signs at the train station.  There was a little arguing between my husband and I as to which way to go (“the sign says North platform that way and South platform this way?! Which one do we go to?)   Thinking back though, it was like a fun detective game.  When we made it on the correct train, it was so relaxing with the soft bench seats that we were able to snooze a little.  We had been up for 24 hours already.

And now I sit typing from my incredible Penzion on the river, looking at the small picturesque town of Cesky Krumlov. It is lovely and relaxing and I love it here. I’m thinking of jumping in the river or renting a kayak…
