New South Wales (NSW) court ruled two men the parents of a child born via surrogacy! Although not all Australian states allow for same-sex couples to be placed on the birth certificate, Supreme Court Justice Paul Brereton made the ruling, feeling it was in the best interest of the child and satisfied that the surrogacy was altruistic, meaning the surrogate was not paid above medical expenses. In 2011 The Surrogacy Act was introduced, criminalizing commercial surrogacy in Australian states. This ruling is believed to be a first for same-sex couples in NSW under the new Act.
