“Unexplained infertility” is a common—and unbelievably frustrating—diagnosis. Global IVF is happy to share the new scientific breakthrough in male infertility. Doctors and scientists have discovered a gene mutation that leaves sperm lacking an important protein. Typically, sperm is coated in a protein, which allows it to swim through the mucus of the cervix without being detected as an invader by the woman’s immune system. Although the coatless sperm does not always fail, the protein seems to play a significant role.
Current medical examinations do not detect this genetic mutation, leaving infertile men in the dark. Now, by performing a simple genetic test, doctors can identify if the mutation is present. Once the reason for infertility is identified, doctors are easily able to identify the next steps for fertility treatment. This should save many intended parents time, money, and the stress of “infertility limbo.”
